PLA and PBAT Biodegradable Packaging: What Brands Should Know Before Switching

Biodegradable packaging made from PLA and PBAT is now a realistic option for shopping bags and light-duty packaging — but switching works best when you know what these materials can and cannot do. Here is a plain-language guide for brands and retail buyers.

What PLA and PBAT Actually Are

PLA (polylactic acid) is a plant-derived bioplastic, usually from corn starch, that is stiff and glossy. PBAT is a flexible, compostable polymer that behaves more like traditional soft PE film. Most biodegradable shopping bags blend the two: PLA for structure, PBAT for flexibility and tear resistance.

Where Biodegradable Bags Work Well

Retail carry bags, garment covers, mailer-style packaging, and event giveaways are the sweet spot — applications with a short use life and no demanding barrier requirements. Our shopping and handle bag line includes PLA and PBAT T-shirt bag options that look and carry like standard bags.

The Limits to Plan Around

  • Composting conditions: most PLA/PBAT films are certified for industrial composting; they break down slowly in home compost or landfill.
  • Shelf life: stock rotates best within 9–12 months; heat and humidity accelerate aging, so store cool and dry.
  • Strength: modern blends carry groceries fine, but for heavy or sharp items a thicker gauge is safer.
  • Barrier: for oxygen-sensitive food, foil-laminated stand-up pouches remain the right tool.

Cost and Compliance

Expect biodegradable film to cost more than standard PE, narrowing as volumes rise. On compliance: many markets (the EU in particular) regulate what may be labeled “biodegradable” or “compostable,” so match your printed claims to the certification your film actually carries — we help buyers verify this before printing.

How to Trial the Switch

Start with one high-visibility SKU — typically the retail carry bag — and run it alongside your current packaging. Send your bag size and expected volume via our custom packaging service or contact page, and our factory will quote a PLA/PBAT version with material certificates included.
